FAQs About Gear Pumps

  • A gear pump contains two-or-more gears that rotate, carrying small pockets of fluid between the gear teeth. These pockets are squeezed as the gears mesh, forcing the fluid out.

  • DPP gear pumps are typically fitted with BLDC, conventional DC and AC motors.

  • In general, DPP pumps last so long servicing is not required. If performance does drop, it is more cost effective to replace the pump head than to service it.

  • This depends on the application (flows, pressures, fluid cleanliness, duty-cycle, etc…) Our engineering team is experienced in life-enhancing designs and takes this into consideration with each application. In many applications, our pumps out last the life of the instrument.

  • The wetted materials are chosen to be compatible with your fluids. DPP uses inert materials wherever possible to resist a wider range of fluids.

  • All design, development and prototyping is performed at our R&D facility in California, USA.

Our manufacturing is performed at our facility in Switzerland to the highest Swiss quality and workmanship.

  • How Gear Pumps Work

External gear pumps are the most common type of rotary positive displacement pump. They consist of a driving gear, connected to a motor, and a driven gear. As the gears rotate, the mesh interface opens, and the expanding internal volume allows external pressure (often atmospheric) to push fluid into the pump. The rotating gears trap fluid between the gear teeth and the cavity wall. This fluid is transported along the cavity wall to the outlet where it is “squeezed” out of the pump when the gear mesh interlocks. Clearances within the pump can allow fluid to circulate back to the inlet, highlighting the need for precision design and manufacturing to achieve high efficiency and accuracy.

    Types of Gear Pumps

External gear pumps vary widely by industry and application, with flow rates ranging from 0.02 L/min to 50 L/min and pressures up to 500 bar. For pumps with flow rates < 5 L/min, the primary categories are direct drive vs. magnetically coupled. Magnetically coupled gear pumps eliminate the shaft seal, which is typically the life-limiting component of the pump. In doing so, the manufacturer must use high-precision components for effective hydrodynamic bearings and to minimize variation in the magnetic coupling. The types of gears can also vary, with spur gears being the simplest to manufacture, but helical gears delivering superior noise and vibration performance.
